Columbus, Ohio Girls Choir Ready for 'Transport' to Alcatraz
NO FOOLIN’ – all girls choir does ‘short-time’ on ‘the Rock’! Columbus, Ohio choral group in San Francisco as part of the recent ‘Festival of Gold’ -National Choral Festival’. (We may have to report that name to the Alcatraz Department of Redundancy Department!)
It appears the ‘trouble-makers’ were deemed ‘incorrigible’ and sent on a tour of the former prison to ‘protect the public’. Held for transport on the bow area of an Alcatraz Cruises tour vessel (where the ‘booking’ photograph was taken) the girls and their ‘handlers’ seemed to be all smiles before departing Pier 33 and the San Francisco waterfront for the short voyage to the site of America’s most notorious prison! Little could they imagine what lay ahead. . .
Ordered by the Alcatraz Dock Staff to ‘smoke only at the Dock Area’ and reminded they would not be allowed to consume food during their stay, the choir girls were then forced to tread up the 130 foot vertical climb to the cold, forboding prison . . . on foot!
All other visitors this day wore headsets while in the Cell-house – evidently to further punish the girls by preventing them from singing – as they would not be heard! To add to the ‘near torture’ the choir soon discovered Alcatraz Island has no Wi-Fi and 300 of the 303 toilets don’t work! ‘Welcome to ‘the Rock’ girls! Oh, and by the way, the girls sentence commenced on April 1, 2011 and concluded 0n April 1, 2011 . . . (April Fool’s to you!)
Former USP-Alcatraz ‘Guard’ and Author – Frank Heaney – Still ‘Working’ on ‘the Rock’ – 63 years later!
- ‘Inside the Walls of Alcatraz’ Author’ Frank Heaney with some fans.
This former ‘Screw’ was so feared – that not even one escape-attempt occurred during this young officer’s ‘time on the Rock’!
In 1948, at age 21, Frank Heaney was hired by Warden Swope as the youngest Correctional Officer (the proper term) ever to work in the United States Federal Penitentiary – Alcatraz. Continue reading
Betty Wallar, age 87, daughter of Gangster-Era Correctional Officer, returns to see ‘greener’ side of Alcatraz Island!
Betty Wallar, age 87, visits west side gardens for first time!
Daughter of Correctional Officer, Staff Photographer, and Cellhouse Locksmith, was never allowed to see most of this little island when her family lived here between 1935 and 1951.
Betty’s family lived in the creatively named ‘Building 64′ – which towers over the dock area and enjoys a sweeping view of the east bay and beyond. Family members had no direct contact with convicts here, but did send their clothes to the Prison Industries Laundry to be washed, tumble-dried and folded by the convict workforce – which included America’s most notorious ‘Gangsters’ – like Al Capone… Continue reading
Rare Stroud Relative Visits Alcatraz to Reclaim Throne!
After being moved to the prison hospital, where he would spend 11 of his 17 years here, the ‘Birdman of Alcatraz’ – Robert Stroud – sued the Federal Government for his own plumbed latrine “like all the other cells have” – and won! (What’ya gonna throw at the ‘hacks’ when they take your bed-pan, Bob?)
George ‘Boris’ Stroud, a successful Scottish entrepreneur in his own right – (Great Grand-uncle sold bird medicines and wrote books from ‘the inside’) – visited Alcatraz on January 9th for the first time and is seen in Robert Stroud’s hospital ward/cell.
Stroud, made famous by film legend Burt Lancaster in the 1962 movie ‘The Birdman of Alcatraz’ – was a genius who wrote several noted studies of bird species and diseases, ironically from inside his own cage.
Stroud was also a sociopathic pedophile – and murderer – who killed an Alaskan bartender who had only ‘tipped’ Stroud’s girl $2- after spending the night with her. ($10 was ‘customary’. . .)
